I learned this the expensive way. Summer 2027 internship recruiting is happening right now, in July 2026. Not in the spring. Not in the fall. Now.

Quant and consulting open first and close on hard dates. Bain's ACI deadline is August 31. Goldman opens August 15. Most software engineering roles are rolling, which sounds relaxing and is actually worse, because rolling means the class fills quietly and the posting stays up long after your odds have collapsed.

So I built an application board that separates roles into three buckets, because they need completely different behavior:

Hard deadline. Work backwards from the date. Rolling. Apply the week it opens, full stop. Not yet open. Set a reminder and stop refreshing the page.

Then I built a spaced repetition drill set for online assessments, 30 problems across 10 patterns, because the OA is a separate skill from interviewing and it is the filter almost everyone underestimates.

Here's the uncomfortable thing the board showed me on day one. I had 25 roles I could apply to immediately and I had submitted zero. My materials were done. My resume was done. The bottleneck was never the materials. It was submissions.

If you're in a job search right now, go count your submitted number. Not your prepared number. The prepared number lies.
