Exploring Bilingual Coding for Inclusive Computer Science Learning

Programming education often asks learners to work through several language layers at once: everyday explanation, technical vocabulary, and the formal notation of code. This poster examines bilingual coding for more inclusive computer science learning.

The study included 60 bilingual participants: 40 novice and 20 experienced participants. Yusuf has been an undergraduate researcher at San José State University since August 2024 under Prof. Ethel Tshukudu, and he also ran CS programs at Yerba Buena High School.

Publication record: this work is a poster, not a journal or conference article. Yusuf is one of nine listed authors and is seventh in author order.

Does Language Matter in Programming? Exploring Student Attitudes and Experiences in a Bilingual Coding Workshop.

This is a separate accepted Computing Education Research (CER) paper for the 2nd ACM Virtual Global Computing Education Conference. It is distinct from the SIGCSE TS 2026 poster above: the venue, submission, title, and author order are different.

Publication record: this work is a paper in the SIGCSE Virtual 2026 CER track. Yusuf is listed fifth and last of five authors; the author list is Ethel Tshukudu, Thien Khang Kieu, Leqaa Deeb, Harshitha Venkateswaran, and Yusuf Gadelrab, all at San José State University.

Poster presentations at SJSU Student Research Day

Yusuf presented Programming across Languages at SJSU’s 20th Annual College of Science Student Research Day in 2025.

He is also a student author on poster #73, Learning Machine Learning with Prior Programming Knowledge: Student Challenges, Attitudes, and Early Successes, in the Department of Computer Science section of the 21st Annual College of Science Student Research Day. The faculty advisor is Ethel Tshukudu. Yusuf is fifth of eleven listed student authors: Leqaa Deeb, Duy Do, Sunny Doan, Shishir Dongre, Yusuf Gadelrab, Thien Khang Kieu, Ayush Mahajan, Tyler Moquin, Ania Niedzialek, Kiana Sarkis, and Harshitha Venkateswaran. The author list appears in the official SRD21 program published by the SJSU College of Science.
